YGA Meets Tegan & Sara

Tegan & Sara are the hottest twin girl pop/punk/folk-rockers ever! We chatted with Tegan in this exclusive YGA interview:

YGA: Hey, its really great to meet you. We're huge fans of you guys. What would you like to say to all your young gay fans?

TEGAN: HEYYY!!

YGA: Your music speaks to so many of us. Why do you think that is?

TEGAN: Maybe because we've always done our own thing. Being a teenager is tough, you know? It doesn't matter if you're gay or if you've got acne or if you're overweight. It's tough being a kid because nobody takes kids seriously. We all get through it, but it's hard to realize it when you're there. It's so hard to get respect.

YGA: What helped you?

TEGAN: Well Sara and I had a wicked group of friends. And our mom. She wasn't very happy when we told her we were gay - I think because every parent wants the best for their kids, no matter what it is. But in the end she was more traumatized about us moving to Vancouver and becoming musicians than about us being gay.

YGA: You're lucky.

TEGAN: I know. So many kids aren't supported by their parents. I watch people suffer all the time and my biggest piece of advice is this: tell your parents they'll be sorry one day. It's true. They will.

YGA: What was it like growing up with a twin sister?

TEGAN: It was great. We were very close. We actually dated twin boys once.. wait, no, I actually dated both of them... But anyway, we always had similar likes and dislikes, we were always together, had the same group of friends. It was great because you always had someone to walk home from school with or hang out with. Our parents divorced really early so we depended on each other. Sara's memories are that she took care of me and mine are that I took care of her. I wouldn't play music if it wasn't for Sara.

YGA: You have a pretty unique songwriting method.

TEGAN: Yea, we basically write separately and don't combine until the end when we're rehearsing to play live or record.

YGA: What about your famous on-stage banter? Did you guys plan to do that in your live shows?

TEGAN: We did, yeah. It's kinda how we control the audience. It makes the show more personal. It's like sure it's a rock concert, but our banter allows you to understand the music better because you understand us.

YGA: Everyone wants to know... how do you manage a relationship with your busy touring schedule!?

TEGAN: Having a life is tough, period. I've been dating someone for a while now and I had to talk with her and say "look, this is my job, it's not my whole life." We might be on the road for a year but then we're home for eight months. It's especially hard in the beginning, before people know what to expect. Sara just moved to Montreal and she's having to start all over. Fortunately we both have strong partners who are really supportive and artistically involved.

YGA: Who's one of your idols?

TEGAN: Phil Collins. He's just amazing. I consider him one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

YGA: What's next for you guys? You've been on Letterman. Your video's a regular on MTV. What now?

TEGAN: We're working on our next album, which I think people will really like. As we get older and more experienced, we just keep getting better and better and our melodies just get richer and more complex.

YGA: We can't wait.

Be sure to check out early songs like "Superstar" and "Proud", which some feel are the duo's gay anthem songs — even though Tegan says they're more about teen power!
